Chapter
Thirty-Three
Violet stopped at the corner of North Street and University Avenue to wait for the signal to cross the street. The late-afternoon sun slanted its golden rays on the buildings, bringing with it a hint of spring. Only a couple of weeks before March 21st, and already the crocuses were starting to stretch from their winter slumber. She tightened the grip on her shoulder bag and stepped off the curb as the light changed. Suddenly, a man ran at her from the side and yanked her arm, propelling her back onto the sidewalk. Violet hit the bricks hard, pain shooting up her arms. For a few seconds, she couldnât focus on what was happening. Shouts and tires squealing on asphalt mingled together.
âMiss, are you okay?â
Violet stared at the man, a short scar marring the left side of his face. Anger shot the words out of her mouth. âYou pushed me down.â There was something familiar about him, but she couldnât place where sheâd see him.
The man started to answer, but a woman nearby overheard and inserted herself into the conversation. âAnd itâs a good thing he did, young lady. That car didnât even stop as it roared down the street and took the corner. If he hadnât gotten you out of the way, you would have been hit.â
Violet gasped, her ire fading at the realization his action saved her. âOh, my. Then thank you.â
The man studied her face. âWill you be all right?â
She tested her limbs. âI think so. Some bruises but nothing too serious.â
He nodded. âBe careful. You might not be so lucky a third time.â Before Violet could ask what he meant or even his name, the man melted into the crowd and was gone.
Struggling to her feet, she swayed as a wave of dizziness swept over her.
The woman who had spoken before gently took her arm and guided her to a bench. âHere, dear. Just sit down for a little bit. An ambulance is on its way.â
âAmbulance? I donât need a doctor. Iâm fine, really.â Violet winced as she sat, her body aching from the impact with the ground. She lifted her hand and saw her palm had red slashes from her skid over the pavement. Her jacket now sported a rip up one arm, and her jeans had a hole in the left knee. At least the bruises and cut from the car crash had faded before sheâd added new ones.
âIs there someone I can call for you?â The woman hovered beside her, her older face a crease of concern.
Violet shook her head. The manâs cryptic words and disappearance made her uneasy. Maybe the carâs path wasnât accidental. âDid you see what kind of the car it was?â
The woman frowned. âNo, it happened so fast. All I know is that it was a black sedan.â
A young man with knit cap and a skateboard tucked under one arm chimed in, âIt wasnât a car. It was a pickup truck.â
The woman turned to him with a hand on one hip.
